Petronas-Sarawak fuel controversy: LNG excluded in phrases agreed by Prime Minister Anwar and State Premier, says the Minister of Law

Kuala Lumpur: the nationwide recognition of Petronas of Petronas of Petros owned by Sarawak’s authorities whereas the state fuel aggregator excludes Liquified pure fuel (GNL), the federal government has disclosed on Tuesday (February 4).

This is among the many phrases of the settlement between Petronas and Sarawak relating to the efforts of the state of Eastern Malaysia for higher management over its oil and fuel assets, stated Azalina Othman, the Prime Minister’s Minister of the Department (legislation and institutional reform ), in a parliamentary response.

He added that the settlement was hit in a gathering between Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim and the premier of Sarawak Abang Johari Open on January seventh.

Petronas and Petros have been in negotiations since July final 12 months to resolve disputes on fuel distribution rights within the state.

Pursuant to Malaysia Petroleum Development Act (PDA) 1974, Petronas has an unique management of the exploration and distribution of the nation’s oil and fuel assets.

But in February 2024, Sarawak appointed Petros, or Petroleum Sarawak Berhad, as the one fuel aggregator of the State pursuant to his distribution of the ordinance on the Gas 2016. Pursuant to Sarawak’s state legal guidelines, a fuel aggregator procures pure fuel for distribution or provide and develops and maintains the state of the fuel distribution community.

The japanese state – which has made a sequence of strikes to place itself as an financial energy in Malaysia – contributes to nearly 90 % of the GNL exports of Malaysia.

Malaysia was the fifth GNL world exporter in 2023, in keeping with the world report of the International Gas Union 2024.

Azalina was answering a query from the member of the Parliament Chong Chieng Jen, who represents the Electoral College of Stampin in Sarawak.

He had sought the main points of the phrases of settlement between Petronas and Sarawak as regards the rights of Sarawak on oil and the fuel extracted from the state.

Petronas will not be required to get the license in Sarawak

Last month, the Prime Minister of Malaysia Anwar Ibrahim expressed confidence wherein the problems between Petronas and Petros had been resolved.
