With the overall election wrapping up Nov. 5, Northwest Indiana officers are getting ready for the subsequent political course of: a caucus.
Lake and Porter counties will each maintain a minimum of one caucus after the overall election outcomes.
The Lake County Democratic Party will maintain a caucus to fill Mark Spencer’s seat on the Gary Common Council. The Porter County Republican Party will maintain a caucus to fill Ed Morales’ seat as Porter Township trustee.
Spencer, a Democrat, was elected Indiana state senator from District 3 this week.
“I’m very grateful to the voter base and the voters who trusted me with their vote,” he informed the Post-Tribune Tuesday evening. “It’s not one thing I take flippantly. I do know that representing District 3 is an actual accountability.”
Spencer has been an at-large member of the Gary Common Council since October 2023. Because he’s an at-large member, about 47 precinct committee members will take part, Lake County Democratic Chairman Jim Wieser mentioned.
The caucus might be held inside 30 days of Nov. 6, the date Spencer resigned, Wieser mentioned. The get together doesn’t know when the caucus might be scheduled or the place will probably be held, he added.
