The bald eagle is now formally the nationwide hen of the United States, after President Joe Biden signed a legislation on Christmas Eve bestowing the dignity on the white-headed, yellow-billed raptor.

The hen has been a nationwide emblem within the United States for years, showing on the Great Seal of the United States – used on US paperwork – since 1782.

But it had not been formally designated a nationwide hen till Congress handed the invoice final week, sending it to Biden’s desk for signature.

“For almost 250 years, now we have known as the bald eagle the nationwide hen when it was not,” stated Jack Davis, co-chair of the National Bird Initiative for the National Eagle Center, in a press release. “But now the title is official and no hen is extra deserving.”

Not everybody all the time agrees on the nationwide standing of the hen of prey.

Founding Father Benjamin Franklin opposed the selection of the bald eagle to characterize the nation, calling it a “bird of bad moral character”.

But not all of Congress shared Franklin’s sentiments.

According to the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, bald eagles, like different eagles world wide, have been seen by many as symbols of energy, braveness, freedom and immortality for generations. And, not like different eagles, the bald eagle was native solely to North America.

Legislation designating the bald eagle because the nationwide hen was spearheaded by Minnesota lawmakers. The state is residence to what Sen. Amy Klobuchar described as one of many largest bald eagle populations within the nation.

The bald eagle can also be protected by the National Emblem Act of 1940, which makes it unlawful to promote or hunt it.
